Makarim al-AkhlaqIbn Abi al-Dunya

135 — Umar ibn Bakīr narrated to us; Abū Abd al-Rahmān al-Tā'ī narrated to us, saying: Abū Burda ibn Abd Allah ibn Abī Burda narrated to us, saying: “It used to be said that Rib'ī ibn Hirāsh had never once told a lie. His two sons then came from Khurāsān. They were rebels who had been wandering from place to place. The local headman went to al-Hajjāj and said, ‘Commander, the people maintain that Rib'ī ibn Hirāsh has never once told a lie. His two sons have now arrived from Khurāsān, and they are rebels.’ Al-Hajjāj said, ‘Bring him to me.’ When Rib'ī arrived, he said, ‘Old man!’ Rib'ī replied, ‘What do you want?’ He asked, ‘Where are your two sons?’ Rib'ī replied, ‘Allah—glorious is His Majesty—is the One whose help is sought. I left them at home.’ Al-Hajjāj said, ‘Then, by Allah, I shall certainly not distress you on their account. They are yours.’”
