130 — Ahmad ibn Ibrāhīm al-ʿAbdī narrated to us. Muhammad ibn ʿUbayd narrated to us, saying: Dāwūd al-ʿAttār narrated to me, saying: “Qutayba ibn Muslim sent Bakr ibn Māʿiz back from Khurāsān. A man accompanied him and asked, ‘Bakr, have you ever lied?’ He gave him no answer. The man again asked, ‘Bakr, have you ever lied?’ He still gave him no answer. When they reached the bathhouse of ʿUmar—or the bathhouse of Aʿyan—the man asked, ‘Bakr, have you ever lied?’ He replied, ‘You have pressed me about this enough. I have never told a lie except once. Qutayba required us to bear arms, so I borrowed a spear. When I passed before him carrying it, he asked, “Bakr, is this weapon yours?” I said, “Yes,” although the spear was not mine.’”
