76 – The judge Abū al-Qāsim informed us; Abū ʿAlī narrated to us; ʿAbdullāh narrated to us; and al-Ḥasan ibn Dāwūd ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir al-Taymī narrated to me; a Qurashī elder related to me that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to ʿĀʾishah: “Recite for me the verses of Ibn ʿUrayḍ the Jew.” She recited:

Indeed, when you seek the company of the noble,
 you will not find my cord slack or frayed.
I keep his trust and guard his honor in his absence
 with all my effort; thereafter he may refuse as he wills.
Uplift your weak one, lest his weakness burden you
 on a day when fully ripened consequences overtake him.
He will either repay you or praise you, and indeed
 whoever praises you for what you have done has repaid you.

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, then said, “Gabriel told me the same: ‘Whoever receives a hand of favor and conceals it has denied it, but whoever acknowledges it has expressed gratitude for it.’”
