75 – The judge Abū al-Qāsim informed us; Abū ʿAlī narrated to us; ʿAbdullāh narrated to us; Aḥmad ibn al-Miqdām al-ʿIjlī narrated to us; ʿUmar ibn ʿAlī al-Muqaddamī narrated to us; al-Sāʾib ibn ʿUmar al-Makhzūmī said: I heard Yaḥyā ibn Ṣayfī say that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “When a hand of favor is extended to someone, it is his duty to repay it; if he cannot, then let him voice his gratitude; and if he does not, he has shown ingratitude for the blessing.”
Yaḥyā then added, “Have you not heard the words of Waraqah ibn Nawfal?
Raise up your weak one, lest his weakness fasten upon you one day—when consequences, once matured, overtake you.
He will either recompense you or laud you, and whoever praises you for what you have done has indeed repaid you.”
Abū al-Ḥasan Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar said: I heard Ibrāhīm al-Harbī say, “The name ‘Yaḥyā ibn Ṣayfī’ is an error; others transmitted it as ‘Ṣayfī ibn Yaḥyā ibn Ṣayfī,’ and that is … Rather, as Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd stated, he is Yaḥyā ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn Ṣayfī ibn Abī Rifāʿah ibn Abī al-Sāʾib ibn ʿĀʾidh ibn Mughīrah ibn ʿUmar ibn Maḥrūm, and more than one narrator—other than Ḥumayd—reported from him.”
