Qada' al-Hawa'ijIbn Abi al-Dunya

65 – The judge Abū al-Qāsim informed us; Abū ʿAlī narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; ʿUmar ibn Bukayr informed me, from Hishām ibn Muḥammad, who said: a man from Banī Tamīm related to me that al-ʿUryān ibn al-Haytham al-Nakhaʿī came to ʿAttāb ibn Warqāʾ al-Tamīmī while he was governor of Isfahān and said:

[Basīṭ metre]
We have come to you, not driven by some passing need,
Nor by obligations owed, nor favors to repay;
But because you are the finest of Iraq’s governors—
Though people say, “Ibn Warqāʾ is a rain-cloud with constant showers.”
If you are generous, it is only what you always do;
And if some hindrance arises, we shall depart and lay no blame.

He (the narrator) said: So ʿAttāb gave him one hundred thousand dirhams.
