41 – The judge Abū al-Qāsim informed us: Abū ʿAlī narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; ʿUmar ibn Abī Muʿādh al-Baṣrī informed us; Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Zabalah narrated to me; Hishām ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿIkrimah informed us, saying:
Al-Muṭṭalib ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥanṭab al-Makhzūmī came to Abū Bakr ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Ḥārith seeking help with a debt that had befallen him. When he sat down, Abū Bakr said to him, “Allah has aided you concerning your debt with twenty thousand.” Those who were present remarked, “By Allah, you did not even let the man ask you!” He replied, “If he has to ask me, I will have taken from him more than I give him.”
٤١ - أَخْبَرَنَا الْقَاضِي أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَلِيٍّ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، أَخْبَرَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ أَبِي مُعَاذٍ الْبَصْرِيُّ، حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ زَبَالَةَ، أَخْبَرَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عِكْرِمَةَ قَالَ: جَاءَ الْمُطَّلِبُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ حَنْطَبٍ الْمَخْزُومِيُّ إِلَى أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ يَسْأَلُهُ فِي غُرْمٍ أَلَمَّ بِهِ، فَلَمَّا جَلَسَ قَالَ لَهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ: «قَدْ أَعَانَكَ اللَّهُ عَلَى غُرْمِكَ بِعِشْرِينَ أَلْفًا» ، فَقَالَ لَهُ مَنْ كَانَ مَعَهُ: وَاللَّهِ مَا تَرَكْتَ الرَّجُلَ يَسْأَلُكَ فَقَالَ: «إِذَا سَأَلَنِي فَقَدْ أَخَذْتُ مِنْهُ أَكْثَرَ مِمَّا أَعْطَيْتُهُ»
