39 – The judge Abu al-Qasim informed us, saying: Abu ʿAli narrated to us; ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Muhammad ibn Salih al-Qurashi narrated to me; Abu al-Yaqzan narrated to us; Abu ʿAmr al-Madini narrated to me, from al-Husayn ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUbayd Allah ibn ʿAbbas, who said:
ʿUbayd Allah ibn al-ʿAbbas said to his nephew: “The best gift is what you give a man before he has to ask; once he asks, what you hand him is merely the price of his honor when he laid it bare before you.”
٣٩ - أَخْبَرَنَا الْقَاضِي أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَلِيٍّ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ الْقُرَشِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْيَقْظَانِ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو عَمْرٍو الْمَدِينِيُّ، عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ: قَالَ عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْعَبَّاسِ لِابْنِ أَخِيهِ: «إِنَّ أَفْضَلَ الْعَطِيَّةِ مَا أَعْطَيْتَ الرَّجُلَ قَبْلَ الْمَسْأَلَةِ، فَإِذَا سَأَلَكَ فَإِنَّمَا تُعْطِيهِ ثَمَنَ وَجْهِهِ حِينَ بَذَلَهُ إِلَيْكَ»
