107 – The judge Abū al-Qāsim informed us; Abū ʿAlī narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Abī Ḥātim narrated to me; Muḥammad ibn Hārūn al-Ṭāʾī narrated to me; Muḥammad ibn Abī Saʿīd reported:

ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Marwān said, “Never has a man looked at me and fixed his gaze on me—examining me intently—without my asking him about his need; and once I have inquired, I follow it up for him. The fellow then rouses from his slumber, finding the night unbearably long, the dawn slow in coming, tossing and turning in eagerness to meet me. At daybreak he comes straight to me, with nothing but his own person as his merchandise, while the merchants head off to their goods, determined not to leave my presence until I have ‘profited’ from his transaction. How astonishing it is for a believer who is certain—who believes that Allah provides for him and that Allah will recompense him—to withhold his wealth from a mighty reward or from fair renown!”
