101 — ‘Abd Allāh narrated to us, saying: ‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Umar Abū ‘Abd al-Rahmān al-Qurashī narrated to me, saying: ‘Alī ibn Hāshim ibn al-Barīd narrated to us, from his father, from Abū al-Jahhāf, who said:
When allegiance was pledged to Abū Bakr, ‘Alī and his companions also pledged allegiance to him. For three days, he stood before the people, saying, “O people, I have released you from your pledge of allegiance. Is anyone unwilling?”
‘Alī would be among the first to stand and say, “By Allah, we will neither release you nor ever ask you to release us from our pledge. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ put you forward to lead the people in prayer; who, then, would put you back?”
