Fadail al-Sahabah li-Ahmad ibn HanbalAhmad Ibn Hanbal

100 — ‘Abd Allāh narrated to us, saying: My father narrated to me, saying: ‘Alī ibn Bahr—that is, Ibn Barrī—narrated to us, saying: ‘Īsā ibn Yūnus narrated to us, saying: Zakariyyā narrated to us, from Abū Ishāq, from Hāni’ ibn Hāni’, from ‘Alī, who said:

Abū Bakr would lower his voice when reciting, whereas ‘Umar would recite aloud. When ‘Ammār recited, he would take passages from one surah and another. This was mentioned to the Prophet ﷺ, who asked Abū Bakr, “Why do you lower your voice?” He replied, “The One whom I address in prayer can hear me.”

He asked ‘Umar, “Why do you recite aloud?” He replied, “I repel Satan and awaken the drowsy.”

He asked ‘Ammār, “And why do you take passages from one surah and another?” He replied, “Do you hear me mixing into it anything that is not part of it?” He said, “No.” He replied, “Then it is all good.”
