79 — ‘Abdullāh narrated to us, saying: My father narrated to me: Yahyā ibn Ādam narrated to us: Qays—meaning Ibn al-Rabī‘—narrated to us, saying: ‘Abdullāh ibn Abī al-Safar narrated to us, from Arqam ibn Shurahbīl, from Ibn ‘Abbās, from al-‘Abbās ibn ‘Abd al-Muttalib, who reported:
During his illness, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Tell Abū Bakr to lead the people in prayer.” Abū Bakr went out and pronounced the opening takbīr (Allah is the Greatest). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) felt some relief and came out, supported between two men. When Abū Bakr saw him, he stepped back, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured to him to remain where he was. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sat beside Abū Bakr and began reciting from the point in the surah that Abū Bakr had reached.
