Fadail al-Sahabah li-Ahmad ibn HanbalAhmad Ibn Hanbal

78 — ‘Abdullāh narrated to us: My father narrated to me: Yahyā ibn Zakariyyā ibn Abī Zā’idah narrated to us, saying: My father narrated to me, from Ibn Ishāq, from al-Arqam ibn Shurahbīl, from Ibn ‘Abbās, who said:

When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) fell ill, he instructed Abū Bakr to lead the people in prayer. Then, feeling some relief, he came out. When Abū Bakr became aware of his presence, he wanted to step back, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured to him, then sat beside Abū Bakr, to his left, and began reciting from the verse that Abū Bakr had reached.
