Fadail al-Sahabah li-Ahmad ibn HanbalAhmad Ibn Hanbal

66 — ‘Abdullāh narrated to us, saying: My father narrated to me, saying: Ya‘qūb ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us, saying: My father narrated to us, from Ibn Ishāq, who said: Muhammad ibn ‘Abdullāh ibn Abī ‘Atīq narrated to me, from ‘Āmir ibn ‘Abdullāh ibn al-Zubayr, from one of his family members, who said:

Abū Quhāfa said to his son Abū Bakr: “My son, I see you freeing weak slaves. If you are going to do this, why not free strong men who would protect you and stand in your defense?”

Abū Bakr replied: “Father, I seek what I seek.”

The narrator said: It is related that these verses were revealed specifically concerning him and what his father had said:

“As for he who gives and fears Allah
and believes in the best reward,
We will ease him toward ease.
But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need
and denies the best reward,
We will ease him toward difficulty.
And what will his wealth avail him when he falls?
Indeed, upon Us is guidance,
and indeed, to Us belongs the Hereafter and the first life.
So I have warned you of a blazing Fire.
None will burn in it except the most wretched,
who denied and turned away.
But the most righteous will be spared it—
he who gives his wealth to purify himself,
not to repay anyone for a favor,
but only seeking the Face of his Lord, the Most High.
And he will surely be satisfied.” [Al-Layl: 6].
