50 — ‘Abdullāh narrated to us, saying: Hadiyyah ibn ‘Abd al-Wahhāb Abū Sālih narrated to me in Mecca, saying: Muhammad ibn ‘Ubayd al-Tanāfisī narrated to us, saying: Yahyā ibn Ayyūb al-Bajalī narrated to us, from al-Sha‘bī, from Wahb al-Suwā’ī, who said:
‘Alī addressed us, saying: “Who is the best of this nation after its Prophet?”
We replied: “You, Commander of the Faithful.”
He said: “No. The best of this nation after its Prophet is Abū Bakr, then ‘Umar. And we did not consider it unlikely that tranquility spoke through ‘Umar’s tongue.”
