414 - ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us, saying: Abū Bakr Shuʿayb al-Sarīfīnī narrated to me, saying: Abū Yahyā al-Himmānī narrated to us, from Abū Janāb al-Kalbī, from al-Shaʿbī, who said:
ʿAbd Khayr al-Hamdānī, Abū Juhayfah al-Suwā’ī—who was a Companion—Zirr ibn Hubaysh, Suwayd ibn Ghafalah, and ʿAmr ibn Maʿdī Karib narrated to me. Thus it is given. The shaykh said: Abū ʿAbd al-Rahmān said: “It is only Maʿdī Karib.”
They said: We heard ʿAlī say:
“The best of this community after its Prophet is Abū Bakr, then ʿUmar. If I wished to tell you who the third is, I would do so.”
٤١٤ - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو بَكْرٍ شُعَيْبٌ الصَّرِيفِينِيُّ قثنا أَبُو يَحْيَى الْحِمَّانِيُّ، عَنْ أَبِي جَنَابٍ الْكَلْبِيِّ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ خَيْرٍ الْهَمْدَانِيُّ، وَأَبُو جُحَيْفَةَ السُّوَائِيُّ، وَكَانَتْ لَهُ صُحْبَةٌ، وِزْرُ بْنُ حُبَيْشٍ، وَسُوَيْدُ بْنُ غَفَلَةَ، وَعَمْرُو بْنُ مَعْدِي كَرِبَ، كَذَا. قَالَ الشَّيْخُ: قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ: وَإِنَّمَا هُوَ مَعْدِي كَرِبَ، قَالُوا: سَمِعْنَا عَلِيًّا يَقُولُ: خَيْرُ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ بَعْدَ نَبِيِّهَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ، ثُمَّ عُمَرُ، وَلَوْ شِئْتُ أَنْ أُخْبِرَكُمْ بِالثَّالِثِ لَفَعَلْتُ.
