391 – ‘Abdullāh narrated to us: ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar—that is, al-Qurashī—narrated to me: Abū Bakr ibn ‘Ayyāsh narrated to me: ‘Āsim narrated to us, from al-Musayyab ibn Rāfi‘, who said:
‘Abdullāh ibn Mas‘ūd travelled from Medina for seven days to reach us. He ascended the pulpit, praised and extolled Allah, then said: “Al-Mughīrah’s slave, Abū Lu’lu’ah, has killed the Commander of the Faithful, ‘Umar.”
The people cried out and wailed, weeping bitterly. Then he said: “We, the Companions of Muhammad ﷺ, gathered and appointed ‘Uthmān ibn ‘Affān as our leader, sparing no effort to choose the best and most accomplished among us.”
