380 – ‘Abdullāh narrated to us: Dāwūd ibn Rushayd narrated to us: al-Walīd—meaning, Ibn Muslim—narrated to us, from ‘Umar ibn Muhammad: Sālim ibn ‘Abdullāh narrated to us, saying:
News of ‘Umar was slow in reaching Abū Mūsā al-Ash‘arī, who was then governor of Basra. There was a woman there in whose robe was a devil that spoke. He sent a messenger to her, saying: “Tell your companion to go and bring me news of the Commander of the Faithful.” The reply was: “He is in Yemen and should return soon.”
They waited a short while, then said: “Go and bring us news of the Commander of the Faithful, for news of him has been slow in reaching us.”
He replied: “That is a man we cannot approach. Between his eyes is the Holy Spirit. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has created no devil who hears his voice without falling on his face.”
