379 – ‘Abdullāh narrated to us: Dāwūd ibn Rushayd narrated to us: al-Walīd—meaning, Ibn Muslim—narrated to us, from ‘Umar ibn Muhammad—meaning, Ibn Zayd ibn ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar—who said: My father, Muhammad ibn Zayd, informed me that ‘Umar included ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar in the consultative council. Someone came to him and said: “O Commander of the Faithful, appoint ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar as your successor. He is a Companion of the Messenger of Allah, one of the earliest emigrants, and the son of the Commander of the Faithful.”
‘Umar replied: “I have already said: By Him in whose hand is my soul, you shall certainly be struck from it. It is enough for us, the family of ‘Umar, to come away with neither credit nor blame.”
٣٧٩ - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ قثنا دَاوُدُ بْنُ رُشَيْدٍ قثنا الْوَلِيدُ، يَعْنِي: ابْنَ مُسْلِمٍ، عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ، يَعْنِي: ابْنَ زَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي أَبِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، أَنَّ عُمَرَ جَعَلَ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ فِي الشُّورَى، فَأَتَاهُ آتٍ فَقَالَ: يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، اسْتَخْلِفْ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ صَاحِبَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ، وَمِنَ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ الْأَوَّلِينَ، وَابْنَ أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ: قَدْ قُلْتُ وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ، لَتُمْحَيَنَّ مِنْهَا، حَسْبُنَا آلَ عُمَرَ الْكَفَافُ، لَا لَنَا وَلَا عَلَيْنَا.
