373 – ‘Abdullāh also narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Abī ‘Umar al-‘Adanī also narrated to me in Mecca: Sufyān narrated to us, from ‘Amr ibn Dīnār, from Ibn ‘Umar, who said:
“When ‘Umar embraced Islam, the people gathered around him, saying twice, ‘‘Umar has forsaken his religion!’ I was on the roof of a house. Al-‘Ās ibn Wā’il al-Sahmī came wearing a brocade coat trimmed with silk and said, ‘‘Umar has forsaken his religion! ‘Umar has forsaken his religion! He is under my protection.’ The people then dispersed.”
Ibn ‘Umar said: “I was amazed at his influence.”
