Sa‘d, from Muhammad ibn Ishāq, from Nāfi‘, the freedman of ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar, from ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar, who said:
“When ‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb embraced Islam, he asked, ‘Who among Quraysh is quickest to spread news?’ He was told, ‘Jamīl ibn Ma‘mar al-Jumahī.’ So he went to him early in the morning.”
‘Abdullāh said: “I followed in his footsteps to see what he would do. I was a boy, but understood everything I saw.” Jamīl ibn Ma‘mar was the grandfather of Nāfi‘ ibn ‘Umar ibn Jamīl ibn Ma‘mar al-Jumahī.
“He came to him and said, ‘Have you not heard, Jamīl, that I have embraced Islam and entered the religion of Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace?’ By Allah, without saying a word in reply, he rose and went off, dragging his feet. ‘Umar followed him, and I followed my father. When he reached the entrance to the mosque, he shouted at the top of his voice, ‘People of Quraysh!’—they were in their gathering places around the Kaaba—‘‘Umar has forsaken his religion!’
“From behind him, ‘Umar said, ‘He is lying! Rather, I have embraced Islam and testified that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah alone, with no partner, and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.’
“They rushed at him, and he continued fighting them as they fought him until the sun stood directly overhead. Exhausted, he sat down, while they stood over him. He said, ‘Do whatever you please! I swear that, if we numbered three hundred men, we would have left it to you, or you would have left it to us.’
“While they were thus engaged, an elderly man of Quraysh approached, wearing a striped robe and a qūmis shirt. He stopped beside them and asked, ‘What is the matter with you?’ They replied, ‘‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb has forsaken his religion.’ He said, ‘So what? A man has chosen a course for himself—what do you want? Do you think Banū ‘Adī ibn Ka‘b will surrender their kinsman to you? Leave the man alone!’ By Allah, it was as though they were a cloth lifted off him.”
‘Abdullāh said: “After we had emigrated to Medina, I asked my father, ‘Father, who was the man who rebuked the people in Mecca on the day you embraced Islam, when they were fighting you?’ He replied, ‘That was al-‘Ās ibn Wā’il al-Sahmī.’”
