370 — ‘Abdullāh narrated to us: Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Ayyūb narrated to us: Ibrāhīm ibn Sa‘d narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishāq, who said:
When ‘Abdullāh ibn Abī Rabī‘ah and ‘Amr ibn al-‘Ās returned to Quraysh without achieving what they had sought concerning the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the Negus had sent them back with an unwelcome answer, ‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb embraced Islam. He was a man of firm resolve; no one dared assail those under his protection. Through him and Hamzah ibn ‘Abd al-Muttalib, the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gained protection, until ‘Umar took the fight to Quraysh.
‘Abdullāh ibn Mas‘ūd used to say: “We could not pray at the Ka‘bah until ‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb embraced Islam. When he embraced Islam, he fought Quraysh until he prayed at the Ka‘bah, and we prayed with him.”
‘Umar embraced Islam after those Companions of the Prophet ﷺ who emigrated to Abyssinia had departed.
