Fadail al-Sahabah li-Ahmad ibn HanbalAhmad Ibn Hanbal

363 — ‘Abd Allāh narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn ‘Abbād al-Makkī narrated to us: Sufyān narrated to us, saying: I heard al-Zuhrī relate these four hadiths. I memorized them as you hear them, but did not memorize their chains of transmission. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“I saw four things concerning ‘Umar. In a dream, I saw myself being brought a vessel containing milk. I drank until I saw its refreshment flowing from my fingertips, then handed what remained to ‘Umar.” They asked, “O Messenger of Allah, how did you interpret that?” He replied, “Knowledge.”

“I also saw the people of my nation wearing shirts: some reached their chests, some their knees, and some their ankles. ‘Umar passed by, dragging his shirt behind him.” They asked, “O Messenger of Allah, how did you interpret that?” He replied, “Religion.”

He said: “I entered Paradise and saw a palace—or a house—there. I asked, ‘To whom does this belong?’ They replied, ‘To a man of Quraysh.’ I hoped that I was that man, but I was told, ‘It belongs to ‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb.’ I wanted to enter, but then remembered your protective jealousy, O Abū Hafs.” ‘Umar wept and said, “O Messenger of Allah, could anyone feel such jealousy towards you?”

“I also saw myself coming to a well. Ibn Abī Quhāfa came and drew one or two bucketfuls, though there was weakness in his drawing—may Allah forgive him. Then ‘Umar came to it, and the bucket in his hand became a large one. He drew water until he quenched the thirst of those who were thirsty, and the people settled at the watering place. I have never seen anyone—or he said, ‘any man of exceptional ability’—accomplish what he did.”
