362 — ‘Abd Allāh narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn ‘Abbād narrated to us: Abū Damra narrated to us, from Ibrāhīm ibn Ismā‘īl ibn Mujammi‘, from Ibn Shihāb, who reported that Ibrāhīm ibn ‘Abd al-Rahmān ibn Abī Rabī‘a informed him, from Umm Kulthūm, from ‘Ā’isha, who said:

During the last Hajj that ‘Umar performed, the Mothers of the Believers also performed Hajj. When we departed from Minā, they passed through al-Muhassab. I heard a man on his mount ask, “Where was the Commander of the Believers?” Then I heard another reply, “He was here; this was where the Commander of the Believers was.” She said: The man made his mount kneel, then recited:

[Tawīl metre]

“Peace be upon you, O leader,
And may Allah’s hand bless that wounded body.
Whoever runs or rides an ostrich’s wings
To match what you achieved yesterday will be outstripped.
You settled affairs, then left behind
Calamities in their husks, not yet burst open.”

‘Ā’isha said: They searched for that rider, but he could not be found, nor was his identity known. We used to say among ourselves that he was one of the jinn.

He said: ‘Umar returned from that Hajj, then was stabbed and died.
