360 — ‘Abd Allāh narrated to us, saying: Zakariyyā ibn Yahyā Zahmawayh narrated to us: Ibrāhīm—meaning Ibn Sa‘d—narrated to us: My father narrated to us, from Abū Salama, who said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said:
“I saw people being presented before me wearing shirts, some reaching their chests and others reaching their knees.” He continued, “‘Umar was presented before me wearing a shirt so long that he was dragging it.”
They asked, “How did you interpret it?”
He replied, “Knowledge.”
٣٦٠ - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ قثنا زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ يَحْيَى زَحْمَوَيْهِ قثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ، يَعْنِي: ابْنَ سَعْدٍ، قثنا أَبِي، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: " رَأَيْتُ النَّاسَ يُعْرَضُونَ عَلَيَّ وَعَلَيْهِمْ قُمُصٌ، مِنْهَا يَبْلُغُ الثَّدْيَ، وَمِنْهَا يَبْلُغُ الرُّكَبَ، قَالَ: وَعُرِضَ عَلَيَّ عُمَرُ وَعَلَيْهِ قَمِيصٌ يَجُرُّهُ "، فَقَالُوا: مَا أَوَّلْتَهُ؟ قَالَ: «الْعِلْمُ»
