Fadail al-Sahabah li-Ahmad ibn HanbalAhmad Ibn Hanbal

345 — ‘Abd Allāh narrated to us: ‘Abd al-A‘lā ibn Hammād narrated to me: Wuhayb ibn Khālid narrated to us: Ja‘far ibn Muhammad narrated to us, from his father:

When ‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb was wounded, he sent for the Emigrants and asked, “Was this done after consultation among you?” ‘Alī ibn Abī Tālib replied, “By Allah, I wish that Allah had shortened our lifespans and added that time to yours.”

Then ‘Alī came to his bier, where he lay covered with a cloth, and said, “There is no one today whose record of deeds I would rather meet Allah with than this man lying beneath the cloth.”
