337 — ‘Abd Allāh narrated to us: My father narrated to me: Wakī‘ narrated to us: Hārūn al-Thaqafī narrated to us, from ‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Ubayd—meaning Ibn ‘Umayr—who said:
While ‘Umar was distributing money, he raised his head and noticed a man with the mark of a blow on his face. He asked, “What is this?” The man replied, “I sustained it during such-and-such a military expedition.” ‘Umar ordered that he be given a thousand dirhams. After a while, he ordered another thousand to be given to him, and continued until he had ordered a total of four thousand dirhams for him. The people said to the man, “Have some shame!” So he left.
‘Umar then said, “Had he stayed, I would have kept giving him as long as a single dirham remained. Here is a man who suffered a blow in the cause of Allah that left a deep scar on his face!”
