335 — ‘Abd Allāh narrated to us: My father narrated to me: Hasan ibn Mūsā narrated to us: Hammād ibn Salamah narrated to us, from ‘Alī ibn Zayd, from ‘Abd al-Rahmān ibn Abī Bakrah, that al-Aswad ibn Sarī‘ said:

I came to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and said, “O Messenger of Allah, I have composed praises and verses extolling my Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, and you as well.” He then related the hadith, including: A man came and asked permission to enter. He was dark-complexioned, tall, bald, and ambidextrous. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, asked me to be silent.

Abū Salamah—meaning Hammād—demonstrated to us how he had hushed him, saying, “As one hushes a cat.”

The man entered, spoke for a while, and then left. He then related the hadith, including: I said, “O Messenger of Allah, who is this man for whom you ask me to be silent?” He replied, “This is a man who does not like falsehood. This is ‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb.”

336 — Rawh narrated to us: Hammād—meaning Ibn Salamah—narrated to us: ‘Alī ibn Zayd informed us, from ‘Abd al-Rahmān ibn Abī Bakrah, from al-Aswad ibn Sarī‘, who said: I came to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. He then related the hadith.
