327 — ‘Abd Allāh narrated to us: My father narrated to me: ‘Alī ibn Ishāq narrated to us: ‘Abd Allāh—that is, Ibn al-Mubārak—informed us: ‘Umar ibn Sa‘īd ibn Abī Husayn informed us, from Ibn Abī Mulaykah, who heard Ibn ‘Abbās say:
‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb was laid upon his bier, and the people gathered around him, making supplications and praying before he was carried away. I was among them. Suddenly, someone grasped my shoulder from behind. I turned around and found that it was ‘Alī ibn Abī Tālib. He prayed for Allah to have mercy on ‘Umar and said:
“I have left behind no one whose deeds I would rather have when meeting Allah, Mighty and Majestic, than yours. By Allah, I certainly used to think that Allah would place you with your two companions, for I so often heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, ‘I went with Abū Bakr and ‘Umar; I entered with Abū Bakr and ‘Umar; and I went out with Abū Bakr and ‘Umar.’ Indeed, I certainly used to think that Allah would place you with them both.”
328 — ‘Abd Allāh narrated to us: Abū al-Rabī‘ Sulaymān ibn Dāwūd al-‘Atakī al-Zahrānī narrated to me: ‘Abd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak narrated to us, from ‘Umar ibn Sa‘īd ibn Abī Husayn, from Ibn Abī Mulaykah, from Ibn ‘Abbās; he then related this hadith.
