Fadail al-Sahabah li-Ahmad ibn HanbalAhmad Ibn Hanbal

322 — ‘Abd Allāh narrated to us: My father narrated to me: ‘Abd al-Razzāq narrated to us: Ma‘mar narrated to us, from al-Zuhrī, from Sālim, from Ibn ‘Umar, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, saw ‘Umar wearing a white garment and asked, “Is your garment new or has it been washed?”

The narrator said: I do not know what reply he gave him. Then the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to him:

“May you wear new clothes, live a praiseworthy life, and die a martyr, and may Allah grant you joy in this world and the Hereafter.”
