316 — ‘Abd Allāh narrated to us: My father narrated to me: Ya‘lā ibn ‘Ubayd narrated to us: Muhammad—meaning Ibn Ishāq—narrated to us, on the authority of Makhūl, from Ghudayf ibn al-Hārith, who said:
I passed by ‘Umar while he was with a group of his companions. One of them caught up with me and said, “Young man, pray for good for me. May Allah bless you!” I asked, “Who are you? May Allah have mercy on you!” He replied, “Abū Dharr.” I said, “May Allah forgive you! You are more deserving.” He said, “I heard ‘Umar say, ‘What an excellent young man!’ And I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say, ‘Allah has placed the truth upon ‘Umar’s tongue, and he speaks it.’”

317 — ‘Abd Allāh narrated to us: My father narrated to me: Yūnus—meaning Ibn Muhammad—and ‘Affān narrated to us; both said: Hammād ibn Salamah narrated to us, on the authority of Burd Abū al-‘Alā’. In his narration, ‘Affān said, “Burd Abū al-‘Alā’ informed us,” on the authority of ‘Ubādah ibn Nusayy, from Ghudayf ibn al-Hārith, who passed by ‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb. ‘Umar said, “What an excellent young man Ghudayf is!” Abū Dharr met him afterwards. He then related a similar account, except that he said:
“Truth has been impressed upon ‘Umar’s tongue and heart.”
In his narration, ‘Affān said:
“Upon ‘Umar’s tongue, and he speaks it.”
