304 — ‘Abdullāh narrated to us: Shujā‘ ibn Makhlad narrated to us by dictation: Yahyā ibn Yamān narrated to us, from Sufyān, from ‘Umar ibn Muhammad, from Sālim ibn ‘Abdullāh, from Abū Mūsā al-Ash‘arī, who said:
News of ‘Umar was slow to reach him, so he spoke to a woman who had a devil in her belly. She said, “Wait until my devil comes, and I will ask him.” He said, “I saw ‘Umar with a cloak wrapped around his waist, applying tar to the camels collected as alms.” He also said, “Whenever the devil sees him, he falls flat on his face. The angel is surely between his eyes, and the Holy Spirit speaks through his tongue.”
Abū ‘Abd al-Rahmān said: Shujā‘ narrated this to us twice. On one occasion he said, “From Abū Mūsā,” and on the other, “News of ‘Umar was slow to reach Abū Mūsā.”
