Fadail al-Sahabah li-Ahmad ibn HanbalAhmad Ibn Hanbal

301 — ‘Abdullāh narrated to us: My father narrated to me: Ya‘qūb narrated to us: My father narrated to us, from Sālih. Ibn Shihāb said: ‘Abd al-Hamīd ibn ‘Abd al-Rahmān ibn Muhammad ibn Zayd informed me that Muhammad ibn Sa‘d ibn Abī Waqqās informed him that his father, Sa‘d ibn Abī Waqqās, said:

‘Umar sought permission to enter upon the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. Some women of Quraysh were with him, speaking to him and asking much of him, their voices raised. When ‘Umar sought permission to enter, they rose and hurried behind the screen. The Messenger of Allah admitted him, laughing.

‘Umar said, “May Allah keep you smiling, O Messenger of Allah!”

The Messenger of Allah said, “I was amazed at these women who were with me: as soon as they heard your voice, they hurried behind the screen.”

‘Umar said, “Yet you, O Messenger of Allah, are more deserving of their awe.” Then ‘Umar said, “You enemies of your own selves! Do you stand in awe of me but not of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace?”

They replied, “Yes; you are sterner and harsher than the Messenger of Allah.”

The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “By Him in Whose hand is my soul, whenever Satan encounters you taking a path, he takes a path other than yours.”

Ya‘qūb said, “I cannot count how many times I heard him”—meaning his father—“say: ‘Sālih narrated to us, from Ibn Shihāb.’”

302 — ‘Abdullāh narrated to us: My father narrated to me: Yazīd ibn Hārūn narrated to us, saying, “Ibrāhīm ibn Sa‘d informed us”; and Hāshim ibn al-Qāsim narrated to us, saying, “Ibrāhīm ibn Sa‘d narrated to us”—from Sālih ibn Kaysān, from al-Zuhrī, from ‘Abd al-Hamīd ibn ‘Abd al-Rahmān, from Muhammad ibn Sa‘d, from his father, who said:

‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb entered upon the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, while some women of Quraysh were with him, asking him and seeking much from him, their voices raised. He then related the rest of the hadith in similar terms.
