297 — ‘Abdullāh narrated to us, saying: Ishāq ibn Mansūr al-Kawsaj, of Marw, narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn al-Mubārak al-Sūrī informed us, saying: Sadaqa ibn Khālid narrated to us, saying: Zayd ibn Wāqid narrated to us, from Busr ibn ‘Ubaydillāh, from Abū Idrīs al-Khawlānī, from Abū al-Dardā’, who said:

I was sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when Abū Bakr approached, holding up the edge of his garment so that his knee was exposed. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw him, he said: “Your companion has become embroiled in a quarrel.”

Abū Bakr came forward and greeted the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, then said: “O Messenger of Allah, something happened between me and ‘Umar, and I acted hastily toward him. Then I regretted what I had done to him and asked him to forgive me, but he refused. I followed him all through al-Baqī‘ until he took refuge from me in his house, and then I came to you.”

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said three times: “May Allah forgive you, Abū Bakr.”

Then ‘Umar regretted having refused when Abū Bakr asked him for forgiveness. He left his house and went to Abū Bakr’s home, where he asked: “Is Abū Bakr here?” They replied: “No.” Realizing that he was with the Messenger of Allah, ‘Umar went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and greeted him.

The face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ began to show anger, until Abū Bakr feared that the Messenger of Allah might say or do something to ‘Umar that would distress him. Seeing this, Abū Bakr knelt down and said: “O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, I was more in the wrong.”

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said: “O people, Allah sent me to you, and you said, ‘You are lying,’ while Abū Bakr said, ‘You are speaking the truth.’ He supported me with his person and his wealth. Will you not leave my companion alone for my sake?” He said this three times.

Abū al-Dardā’ said: After that, Abū Bakr was no longer subjected to any hurt.
