Then ‘Uqbah ibn ‘Amr, Abū Mas‘ūd, said:

“Yet you resent al-Hasan for a dream he saw! I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a military expedition when the Muslims suffered such severe hardship that sorrow showed on their faces, while joy showed on the faces of the hypocrites. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw this, he said, ‘By Allah, the sun will not set before Allah brings you provision.’

“‘Uthmān knew that Allah and His Messenger would be true to their word, so he set off on his riding camel. He came upon fourteen camels and bought them along with the food they carried. He sent seven to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and seven to his own household. When the Muslims saw the caravan arriving, joy showed on the faces of the believers, while sorrow showed on the faces of the hypocrites.

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, ‘What is this?’ They replied, ‘‘Uthmān has sent it as a gift to you.’

“I saw him raise his hands and supplicate for ‘Uthmān as I had never heard him supplicate for anyone before or since: ‘O Allah, grant to ‘Uthmān, and bestow Your favor upon ‘Uthmān.’ He raised his hands so high that I could see the whiteness of his armpits.”
