285 – ‘Abd Allāh narrated to us: My father told me: ‘Abd Allāh ibn al-Hārith al-Makhzūmī al-Makkī narrated to us: Hanzala ibn Abī Sufyān told me, from his brother ‘Abd al-Rahmān, from ‘Ubayd ibn Rukāna, from Abū Mūsā al-Ash‘arī, who said:
Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) entered an enclosure and said, “Guard the entrance for me.” Abū Bakr then came and said, “May my family be your ransom! Have you seen Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him)?” I replied, “He entered the enclosure and told me, ‘Guard the entrance for me.’” Abū Bakr said, “Ask his permission for me to enter, may my family be your ransom!”
I went and said, “Abū Bakr is asking permission to enter.” He said, “Let him in, and give him glad tidings of Paradise.” So I went to him, gave him permission to enter, and said, “Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) gives you glad tidings of Paradise.”
Then ‘Umar came and said the same. I went in to Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said, “Let him in, and give him glad tidings of Paradise.” So I gave him permission to enter and said, “Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) gives you glad tidings of Paradise.”
Then ‘Uthmān came and said the same. I asked Allah’s Messenger for permission for him to enter. He remained silent for a while, then said, “Let him in, and give him glad tidings of Paradise after hardship—or a trial.”
