243 – ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us, saying: My father narrated to me, saying: Abū Nuʿaym narrated to us, saying: Sharīk narrated to us, from al-Aswad ibn Qays, from ʿAmr ibn Sufyān, who said:
A man delivered an address on the day of the battle at Basra, when ʿAlī was victorious. ʿAlī said: “This is an accomplished orator. The Messenger of Allah came first, Abū Bakr came second, and ʿUmar came third. Then, after them, turmoil struck us, in which Allah does whatever He wills.”
