236 – ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us, saying: Zakariyyā ibn Yahyā ibn Sabīh, known as Zahmawayh, narrated to me in Wāsit, saying: Shuʿayb ibn Safwān narrated to us, from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr, from Ibn Abī al-Muʿallā, from Abū al-Muʿallā, who said:
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, ascended the pulpit in Medina and said:
“My feet stand at one of the entrances to the Pool.”
He said: The Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, were gathered in large numbers below the pulpit, and Abū Bakr was among them with his head covered. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“One of Allah’s servants was given a choice by his Lord between living in this world as long as he wished and eating whatever he wished of its food, and meeting his Lord.”
None of those present grasped what the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, meant except Abū Bakr, who began to sob. The people said, “Look at this old man! What makes him weep? The Messenger of Allah said, ‘One of Allah’s servants was given a choice by his Lord between living in this world as long as he wished and eating whatever he wished of its food, and meeting his Lord. The servant chose to meet his Lord.’ So what makes this old man weep?”
When he heard their words, he raised his head towards the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and said, “Rather, we would ransom you with our fathers and our wealth!”
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“No one has been more generous with his companionship or his wealth than Ibn Abī Quhāfah. Were I to take an intimate friend, I would take Ibn Abī Quhāfah. But ours is affection, brotherhood, and faith; and indeed, your companion is Allah’s intimate friend.”
