225 – ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us, saying: My father narrated to me, saying: Yahyā ibn Saʿīd narrated to us, from Sadaqah ibn al-Muthannā, who said: My grandfather Riyāh ibn al-Hārith narrated to me that al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah was in the great mosque, with the people of Kufa seated to his right and left. A man called Saʿīd ibn Zayd came, and al-Mughīrah greeted him and seated him on the couch at his feet. Then a man from Kufa came, faced al-Mughīrah, and began hurling abuse repeatedly.
Saʿīd asked three times, “Whom is this man insulting, Mughīr ibn Shuʿb?” He continued: “Do I not hear the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) being insulted in your presence, while you neither object nor put a stop to it? I testify concerning the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to what my ears heard and my heart retained from him. I would never attribute a lie to him for which he would question me when I meet him. He said:
‘Abū Bakr will be in Paradise; ʿUmar will be in Paradise; ʿAlī will be in Paradise; ʿUthmān will be in Paradise; Talhah will be in Paradise; al-Zubayr will be in Paradise; ʿAbd al-Rahmān ibn ʿAwf will be in Paradise; and Saʿd ibn Mālik will be in Paradise.’
“And there is a ninth believer whom I could name if I wished.”
Those in the mosque clamored, imploring him: “Companion of the Messenger of Allah, who is the ninth?”
He replied: “I am the ninth believer, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is the tenth.”
