186 - ‘Abdullāh narrated to us, saying: My father narrated to me: Abū Mu‘āwiyah narrated to us: Al-A‘mash narrated to us, from ‘Amr ibn Murrah, from Abū ‘Ubaydah, from ‘Abdullāh, who said:
On the day of Badr, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “What do you say about these captives?” Abū Bakr said, “O Messenger of Allah, they are your people and your kin. Spare their lives and call upon them to repent; perhaps Allah will accept their repentance.” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, went inside without giving them any reply.
He continued: Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came out to them and said, “You, Abū Bakr, are like Abraham, peace be upon him, who said: ‘So whoever follows me is of me; and whoever disobeys me—indeed, You are Forgiving and Merciful’ [Ibrāhīm: 36]. And you, Abū Bakr, are like Jesus, who said: ‘If You punish them, they are Your servants; and if You forgive them, indeed, You are the Almighty, the All-Wise’ [al-Mā’idah: 118].”
187 - ‘Abdullāh narrated to us: My father narrated to us: Mu‘āwiyah—that is, Ibn ‘Amr—narrated to us, saying: Zā’idah narrated to us, and he related a similar account.
