Fadail al-Sahabah li-Ahmad ibn HanbalAhmad Ibn Hanbal

177 - ‘Abdullāh narrated to us, saying: My father narrated to me: Yahyā ibn Ādam narrated to us: Abū Bakr—that is, Ibn ‘Ayyāsh—narrated to us, from al-A‘mash, from Abū Sālih, who said:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Abū Bakr to lead the pilgrimage. After he had set out, he sent ‘Alī after him with verses from the beginning of Sūrah Barā’ah. Abū Bakr returned and said, “O Messenger of Allah, what is the matter?”

He replied, “All is well. You are my companion in the cave and my companion at the Cistern.”

Abū Bakr said, “I am content.”
