Fadail al-Sahabah li-Ahmad ibn HanbalAhmad Ibn Hanbal

125 — Abū Sālih al-Hakam ibn Mūsā narrated to me: Shu‘ayb ibn Ishāq narrated to us, from Mis‘ar, from ‘Amr ibn Murra, from Khaythama, who said:

A poet came to ‘Umar and asked, “Shall I recite to you?” ‘Umar did not ask him to recite, but the poet began reciting and mentioned the Prophet ﷺ in his verse, saying:

[Rajaz metre]
“May Allah have mercy on Muhammad for his patient endurance.”

‘Umar said, “He has indeed.”

The poet continued:
“Then on Abū Bakr and ‘Umar together.”

‘Umar said, “As Allah wills.”
