124 — ‘Abd Allāh narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Sulaymān ibn Khālid al-Fahhām, Abū Ja‘far, narrated to me, saying: ‘Alī ibn Hāshim narrated to us, from Kathīr—that is, al-Nawwā’—who said:
I said to Abū Ja‘far, “So-and-so narrated to me, from ‘Alī ibn Husayn, that this verse was revealed concerning Abū Bakr and ‘Umar: ‘And We will remove whatever is in their hearts of resentment, as brothers, on thrones facing one another.’ [Al-Hijr: 47]”
He said, “By Allah, it was indeed revealed concerning them! Concerning whom else could it have been revealed?”
I asked, “What resentment was that?”
He replied, “The resentment of the days of ignorance. There had been resentment between Banū Taym, Banū ‘Adī, and Banū Hāshim in the days of ignorance. When these men embraced Islam, they came to love one another. Then Abū Bakr suffered pain in his side, and ‘Alī began warming his hand and applying it to Abū Bakr’s side to soothe it. Then this verse was revealed.”
