Fadail al-Sahabah li-Ahmad ibn HanbalAhmad Ibn Hanbal

102 — ‘Abd Allāh narrated to us, saying: My father narrated to me, saying: Tulayd ibn Sulaymān narrated to us, saying: Abū al-Jahhāf narrated to us, saying:

When allegiance was pledged to Abū Bakr, he closed his door to the people for three days, saying each day, “I have released you from your pledge of allegiance, so pledge allegiance to whomever you wish.”

He said: Each time, ‘Alī—meaning Ibn Abī Tālib—would stand and say, “We will neither release you nor ask you to release us from our pledge. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, put you forward; who, then, would put you back?”
