Ahmad informed us:
74 – Abu Bakr narrated to us; Ibrahim ibn ʿAbd Allah narrated to us, who said: “ʿAbd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn ʿUqbah related to me, saying: ‘Muhammad ibn Hisham al-Nasibi, together with a group from Nisibin, told me:
“There lived among us a man who went to excess against his own soul; he was known by the kunyah Abu ʿAmr and he used to drink wine. One night, while still in that state, he suddenly woke up in terror. We asked him, ‘What is the matter with you?’ He replied, ‘Someone came to me in this sleep of mine and kept repeating these words until I learned them by heart:
The matter has grown urgent for you, Abu ʿAmr,
while you remain bent over your wine;
You quaff a ruddy, stone-pressed vintage—
the flood has swept you away, and you do not know.’
