Ahmad informed us; Abu Bakr narrated to us.
73 – Al-ʿAbbās ibn Hishām also narrated to me, from his father, who said: Al-Raḥḥāl al-Fahmī said to ʿAmr ibn Saʿīd ibn al-ʿĀṣ:
[al-Baḥr al-Ṭawīl]
“ʿAmr invited me to something I did not desire,
Though, had ʿAmr but known, I already understood his intent.
So I said, ‘O ʿAmr, abandon the matter you are contemplating,
For I am one to whom wine is unlawful.
Shall I drink it after reaching eighty? If I did, no praise would be due me,
Even were poverty to encompass me on every side.
For poverty is a better outcome than a clear draught of wine
That would leave me a lasting disgrace, even though it spoil my life.
My descendants would be reviled because of it whenever they were named,
And the grave would never erase that shame from me.’”
