66 – My father (may Allah have mercy upon him) also told me that one of the wise once advised his son, “Guard yourself against nabīdh (fermented wine), for it hastens your resurrection and drives your honour far from you.”
Ahmad likewise informed us, and Abu Bakr narrated to us:
67 – My father (may Allah have mercy upon him) recited to me the lines of a man who had abandoned nabīdh:
I left the nabīdh to those enamoured of it
And turned to Allah in repentance from drinking it.
I chose my faith over fleeting delight,
For I was a man who feared his Lord.
If there is good in it, I have gained that good;
But if it is evil, I shall be punished for it.
68 – It has reached me that a man of Banū ʿĀmir once entered upon some companions while they were drinking. They offered him a cup, but he refused and said:
They have brought a brimming, yellow, ruinous draught—
Tell me, what kinship is there between your bādhīq and wine?
I fear my Sovereign should He punish me,
And I fear my clan’s reproach should it tarnish my lineage.
