Ahmad informed us, and Abu Bakr narrated to us:
64 – Abu Muhammad al-Rabiʿī ʿAbd Allah ibn Muhammad related to me: A man from the Arabs was asked, “Why do you not drink nabīdh (fermented wine)?” He replied, “By Allah, I am pleased with my mind only when it is sound; so how could I admit into it something that would ruin it?”
65 – A man of Banū Taghlib, who had been a drinker of nabīdh and then renounced it, recited:
I have left the wines to those who crave them,
The sweet new must and the bitterness of drunkenness.
They said, “Your cure is in a single draught
Of wine, begrudgingly thinned with but a captive drop of water.”
They have lied—for no noble soul is healed
By an evil he recognizes only after a worse one.
