Ahmad informed us; Abu Bakr narrated to us. ⦗77⦘

62 – Muhammad ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Qarāṭīsī also related to me. He said: A man drank nabīdh and became intoxicated, then slept through the final ʿIshāʾ prayer. His female cousin—known for her piety and sound judgment—kept rousing him so that he would perform the prayer. When she persisted, he swore, making her divorce irrevocable, that he would not pray three times, and he sealed the oath by clasping his hand. At daybreak the prospect of losing his cousin weighed heavily on him, yet he passed the whole day and the ensuing night without praying; he awoke unchanged, an illness struck him, and he died.

Concerning such a case someone has said:
“Do you, O drunken fool, in your ignorance feel secure
that death will not surprise you while you are in your cups?
You will become a lesson to all mankind,
and you will meet Allah among the worst of creation.”
