Ahmad informed us; Abu Bakr narrated to us.
61 – Suwayd also related to me; he said: Sahl ibn al-Tayyib told me—while he was in Baghdad—that a man came home drunk. His wife rushed at him and reproached him, so he swore, making her divorce conditional, that he would marry another woman that very night. When she heard this, she went out to the night-watchman and told him. He said, “People have already gone to sleep.” She replied, “If he does not take a wife tonight, I shall leave.”
The watchman therefore went to his mother, an elderly woman, and informed her of the man’s oath. She said, “Do whatever you wish.” So he contracted a marriage between the man and his own mother.
At dawn the man was found dead. The old woman then shared the one-eighth portion of the estate that belonged to the (first) wife, but she was eventually bought off for thirty thousand. Thus, intoxication is the sum of all evil.
