Ahmad informed us; Abu Bakr narrated to us:
51 – Al-Mufaddal ibn Ghassān related to me. He said: Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar narrated to us; he said: Ibn Abī al-Zinād, from his father, recounted:
“In the Age of Ignorance, no man of Quraysh died without first renouncing wine out of shame for what it involved—apart from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Judʿān and Ḥarb ibn Umayyah. Yet Ibn Judʿān repented before his death and said:
[al-Baḥr al-Wāfir]
I drank the wine until my people cried,
‘Will not the water-bearer ever wake?’
Until no pillow cradled me in sleep—
I lay upon remote, unyielding dust;
Until my pawned effects had shut the tavern,
And degradation came from trusted friends.

He added: Hishām and al-Walīd, the two sons of al-Mughīrah, and Umayyah ibn Khalaf likewise abandoned wine, deeming it beneath their dignity.”
